♂Augustin Hébert

Augustin Hébert (born about 1620 – died between 19 July and 23 November 1653), also called Jolicœur, was a soldier and tailor from Caen who, by the account of the Québec register of immigrant origins, was among the recruits for Montréal in 1642, the year the settlement was founded. He was the seventh great-grandfather of Floyd Amatus Delahorne (1922–2014), through his daughter Jeanne Hebert (1647–1687).

Early life

He was born about 1620 at Caen in Normandy, the son of Jean Hébert, a merchant of that city, and Isabeau Troussart. According to the Fichier Origine, which compiles the documented French origins of Canada’s early settlers, he first crossed to Canada in 1637 as a soldier of the garrison at Québec, joined the Montréal recruits of 1642, who founded Fort Ville-Marie^W, and went back to France in 1645.

Marriage and family

By January 1646 he was a tailor in Paris, living near the marché neuf in the parish of Saint-Germain-le-Vieil. On 13 January 1646 he signed a marriage contract there, before the notary Étienne Poisant, with Adrienne Du Vivier of Corbeny in Picardy, the daughter of the late Antoine Du Vivier, a saddler, and Catherine Journet. His father was dead by then. Their daughter Jeanne was baptised in Paris in 1647, at Saint-Barthélemy, and the family then sailed for Canada. At least four more children followed there: Paule, born in January 1649 and buried less than two weeks later; Léger in 1650; Ignace in 1652; and Madeleine-Louise in 1653.

Death

He died between 19 July and 23 November 1653, the year his youngest daughter was born. The records in hand do not state the cause. His widow later married Robert Cavelier; Tanguay’s dictionary notes the marriage without a date.

Some family trees give him a different birth year and birthplace, and even a different given name. None cites a record, and they have not been used.
