♂Bartholomew Allerton

Bartholomew Allerton (about 1613 – between October 1658 and February 1659) was a child passenger on the Mayflower who later returned to England and became a minister in Suffolk. He was the elder brother of Mary Allerton (1617–1699), the eighth great-grandmother of Frederic Roger Curtis (1928–2007).

He was born about 1613, probably at Leiden in Holland, the son of Isaac Allerton (1586–1659) and Mary Norris (died 1621), members of the English separatist congregation there. William Bradford’s list of the Mayflower passengers names “Mr. Isaac Allerton and Mary his wife, with three children, Bartholomew, Remember and Mary”. His mother died at Plymouth in the first winter, and in the Plymouth division of cattle in 1627 he is listed with his father, his stepmother Fear, his sisters Remember and Mary and his half-sister Sarah.

He later went back to England, where, according to a scholarly study of the first New England settlers, he became minister at “Bamfield” in Suffolk, taken to be Bramfield^W. Bradford, counting the passengers’ descendants in 1651, wrote only that “his son Bartle is married in England but I know not how many children he hath”. A Mayflower compilation adds that he married first a woman named Margaret, and after her death Sarah Fairfax, a daughter of Benjamin Fairfax, and that his will, made at Bramfield on 15 October 1658, was proved on 19 February 1658/59. He therefore died in the same winter as his father, who died at New Haven in February 1659. His widow Sarah’s will, made at Halesworth^W in 1678, names four children, two sons and two daughters.
