♂Louis Pierrecot de Bayeul

Louis Pierrecot de Bayeul was an officer of the colonial troops in New France and an écuyer^W, of the parish of Bourbaudoin in the diocese of Rouen, whose marriage at Contrecoeur on 19 June 1702 was witnessed by three seigneurs. He was the second husband of Madeleine Chrétien, the ninth great-grandmother of Nancy Jane Blanchard (1929–2006).

The index of the marriage register, where his name is written “Depierreco Debayeul”, gives him as the son of Pierre de Pierrecot de Bayeul, écuyer, then deceased, and of Marie Anne Came. The bride was Madeleine Chrétien, of Saint-Eustache in Paris, the widow of Pierre Chicoine; the index calls her “single”, which appears to be an error of the index. The witnesses were Charles Petit de Levilliers, écuyer, Alexandre Le Neuf de Beaubassin, a lieutenant, and François Antoine Pécaudy de Contrecoeur^W, écuyer, each named as a seigneur. Écuyer was the lowest title of the French nobility, and the groom was himself so styled; his witnesses were men of the same class, holders of seigneuries^W.

Madeleine was buried at Contrecoeur on 25 February 1709. The burial register calls her the wife of Louis “Audet de Bayeul”, écuyer, “enseigne dans les troupes”, an ensign^W in the troops. No children of the marriage are on record. Tanguay’s Dictionnaire généalogique names him Louis Audet de Pierre-Cot, Sieur de Bailleul, a lieutenant of a company of the marine, that is, of the Troupes de la Marine^W, the soldiers the French navy kept in the colony. The dictionary records a second marriage for him at Saint-François on Île Jésus in February 1712, with children by it, and notes an English girl of six, baptised there on 20 September 1704, who was being raised in his household. It gives no date of birth or death for him, and his own entry places the Contrecoeur wedding in 1703, though its entry for Madeleine and the register both give 1702.
