♀Marie Magdelaine (surname unknown)

Marie Magdelaine is known only from the marriage entry of her son, Jean Baptiste Rabalais, at New Orleans on 12 January 1733. A published abstract of the New Orleans parish register calls the groom a resident of Pointe Coupée and a native of “Rochefoucant in Poitou”, and names him the son of “Jean Baptiste Rabalay and Marie Magdelaine”, giving her no surname. She was the sixth great-grandmother of Floyd Amatus Delahorne (1922–2014), through her son Jean Baptiste Rabalais (died 1759).

No record of her parents has been found, nor of her baptism, marriage or death, and the abstract does not say whether she was still living in 1733. One online family tree gives her surname as Papise, attributing it to a published edition of the New Orleans church records, but no record read for the family confirms it. Her son’s birthplace has been read both as La Rochefoucauld, in the modern department of Charente, and as the naval port of Rochefort. The baptisms of La Rochefoucauld’s three parishes have been read for the early 1690s without finding the surname, and her marriage does not appear in the Rochefort marriage indexes read so far, those of Notre-Dame for 1682 to 1688 and of Saint-Louis for 1687 to 1693.
