♀Remember Allerton

Remember Allerton (about 1615 – between 1652 and 1656) was a child passenger on the Mayflower who grew up at Plymouth and married Moses Maverick^W of Marblehead, to whom her father, the Pilgrim merchant Isaac Allerton, gave his houses and fishing stages there in 1635. She was the elder sister of Mary Allerton (1617–1699), the eighth great-grandmother of Frederic Roger Curtis (1928–2007).

Leiden and Plymouth

She was born about 1615 at Leiden in Holland, the second child of Isaac Allerton (1586–1659) and Mary Norris (died 1621), members of the English separatist congregation there. In 1620 the family sailed on the Mayflower; William Bradford’s list of the passengers names “Mr. Isaac Allerton and Mary his wife, with three children, Bartholomew, Remember and Mary”. Her mother gave birth to a stillborn son aboard the ship in Plymouth harbour that December and died at Plymouth on 25 February 1621. In the Plymouth division of cattle in 1627, Remember is listed in her father’s household with her stepmother Fear Brewster, her brother Bartholomew, her sister Mary and her half-sister Sarah.

Marriage and Marblehead

By 6 May 1635 she had married Moses Maverick, a son of the Reverend John Maverick^W, minister at Dorchester. A Mayflower compilation gives his baptism at Huish in Devon on 3 November 1611. On that day in 1635 the Massachusetts Bay General Court recorded that “Mr. Ollerton hath given to Moses Maveracke, his son-in-law, all his houses, buildings, & stages, that he hath at Marble Head, to enjoy to him & his heirs forever”. The stages were the wooden platforms on which fish were split and dried. The couple made their home at Marblehead.

The same compilation lists seven children, baptised between 1639 and 1652, most of them at the Salem church; a first daughter Elizabeth died young and a later one was given the same name. Counting the descendants of the passengers in 1651, Bradford wrote that “his daughter Remember is married at Salem and hath three or four children living”. Her eldest daughter, Rebecca, married John Hawks of Lynn in 1658 and died the next year; in 1661 the young widower married Sarah Cushman, a daughter of Remember’s sister Mary, so that the two Allerton sisters’ daughters were in turn wives of the same man.

Death

Remember died at Marblehead after the baptism of her last child, Remember, on 12 September 1652, and before 22 October 1656, when her husband married again, at Boston, to Eunice (Cole) Roberts, widow of Thomas Roberts. No record of her death or burial has been found. Moses Maverick lived until 28 January 1685/86 and died at Marblehead aged 76.
