René Maillot (born about 1637) was a habitant of Grondines, on the St. Lawrence in New France, also called Laviolette. He was the ninth great-grandfather of Nancy Jane Blanchard (1929–2006), through his son Guillaume Maillot (1680–).
He was 44 years old at the census of Grondines in 1681, which places his birth about 1637. His parents are not known, and neither is his place of origin: a first search of a register of French emigrants to Canada, under the forms Maillot and Mailhot, found no entry for him. He married Marie Chapacou, who had been baptised at Néré, in Saintonge, in 1658, according to a compilation of French emigrants; no record of their marriage has been found in the indexed parish registers of Québec. The couple were living at Grondines when their son Guillaume was born there on 31 December 1680 and baptised on New Year’s Day 1681. When Guillaume married at Montréal in 1704, the register described René as a habitant. Marie Chapacou was buried at Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade on 25 December 1733, and her burial record calls her husband René Maillot Laviolette, adding the dit nameW, or by-name, that he also carried. No record of his death has been found.
