♂Jacques Delaporte

Jacques Delaporte (about 1615 – buried 3 September 1663) was a man of Ars on the Île de Ré, off La Rochelle, whose seven children were baptised in the Catholic parish of St-Étienne d’Ars. Two years after his death, his widow took their children across the Atlantic to Québec. He was the tenth great-grandfather of Nancy Jane Blanchard (1929–2006), through his daughter Renee Delaporte (died 1705).

Life

Jacques was the son of Jehan Laporte and Judith Rodon. His birth has not been found; his age of 48 at burial places it about 1615. The Fichier Origine’s researchers report that his parents married on 8 March 1615 at the Protestant temple of La Rochelle, which would make the family Huguenot in origin; that register has not been seen here. By the time his own children were born, the family worshipped as Catholics at Ars.

He married Esther Coindriau, a native of Ars. The date of the marriage is not known; their eldest child, Renee, was baptised at St-Étienne d’Ars on 23 January 1642, and six more children followed there between 1643 and 1662. Nothing is recorded of his trade.

Jacques was buried at Ars on 3 September 1663, six weeks after Renee married Jacques Arrivee in the same church. In 1665 Esther, now a widow, sailed for Québec with Renee and her husband and with the younger children, among them a daughter, Marie-Anne, born in 1658. Esther married again at Québec in March 1666.

His surname is written Laporte, De Laporte, Delaporte and Desportes in the records of the family. An older family compilation gave his death as “before 26 July 1665”; the burial of 3 September 1663 at Ars is the date used here.
