Jeanne Mesme (buried 13 March 1648) was the wife of Arthur Tessier, a carpenter of the parish of Breil, in Anjou, France. She was the eleventh great-grandmother of Nancy Jane Blanchard (1929–2006), through her son Urbain Tessier dit Lavigne (1626–1689).
She appears in the baptism of her son Urbain at the church of Breil on 10 February 1626, where the priest named her as the wife of “Arthus Tessier”, carpenter, and described the couple as “of this parish”. Urbain is the only child of the couple found in the records. She was buried on 13 March 1648 at Notre-Dame of Château-la-Vallière, in neighbouring Touraine; later that same year her son sailed for New France, where he married at Quebec in September and settled at Montreal. Her date of birth is not known, and the Breil baptism and the French-origins file compiled on her son name no parents for her.
Notes
The scanned text of Tanguay’s dictionary of Quebec families gives her surname in a damaged form, “Me-s-ne”, which was once taken for Ménard. The Breil baptism and the French-origins file on her son both give Mesme.
