John Eggleston (27 March 1659 – 10 March 1730/31) was a militia corporal of Windsor, Connecticut. He was the seventh great-grandfather of Frederic Roger Curtis (1928–2007), through his daughter Esther Hester Eggleston (1682–1761).

Early life

John Eggleston was born in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut Colony, on 27 March 1659, the son of James Eggleston and his wife Hester. James Eggleston died suddenly in December 1679, and the inventory of his estate, taken the following year, lists among the heirs “John, age 21 March next,” fixing his son’s birth in March 1659. A local history compiled two centuries later records that the family lived “near the brick schoolhouse, five miles northwest of Hartford.”

Marriage and family

On 1 June 1682 he married Esther, also recorded as Hester, Mills, at Windsor. The couple had eleven children born between 1682/3 and 1707/8, among them Esther, who married Josiah Filley, James, John, Edward, and seven further daughters, one of whom, Deliverance, died in 1715. He was known in later life as “Corp. John,” a militia rank recorded in his will and in the town record of his death. Five of the children’s marriages are in the Windsor records: Sarah married Jonathan Stiles in January 1708/9, James married Martha Clark in 1718, Dorcas married Enoch Drake in 1719, Ann married Solomon Clark in February 1719/20, and John married Constant Hoskins in 1725.

Death

Eggleston made his will on 17 June 1730, naming his wife Esther as executrix, his sons James, John, and Edward, and his daughters Esther Filley, [Sarah] Stiles, Abigail Eglestone, Dorcas Drake, Anne Clark, Dameras Eglestone, and Martha Eglestone. He died at Windsor on 10 March 1730/31, entered in the town record as “John, Corp.” The will was proved on 3 August 1731, and his inventory was valued at £609.

Notes

His parentage as the son of James Eggleston is considered well established, resting on the fit between the 1679 probate inventory and the Windsor birth record. The account locating the family “near the brick schoolhouse” rests on a nineteenth-century compilation and has not been checked against a primary record.
