♂Pierre Arrivee

Pierre Arrivee (died April 1673) was an inhabitant of Ars, on the Île de Ré off La Rochelle, whose son Jacques left the island for New France in 1665 and died at Québec within a year or two of his father’s own death at Ars. He was the tenth great-grandfather of Nancy Jane Blanchard (1929–2006), through his son Jacques Arrivee (1639–1673).

Life

Pierre was the son of another Pierre Arrivee of Ars. He married Jeanne Rouzeau, and a compilation of French emigrants to Canada dates the marriage at Ars on 7 May 1635. Their daughter Anne was born about 1636 and married Pierre Rouzeau, son of Pierre Rouzeau and Marguerite Chevalier, at Ars on 7 November 1650. Their son Jacques was baptised in the church of Saint-Étienne at Ars in 1639; his godparents were Jacques Maley and an Anne Rouziau or Rouriau - the name is hard to read, and may be a form of the mother’s own family name.

Jacques married Renee Delaporte at Ars in 1663, sailed for New France with his family in 1665 and settled at Québec, where he died between October 1671 and August 1673. Pierre died at Ars on 25 April 1673 and was buried the next day; Jeanne was buried there on 24 June 1674.

Notes

The marriage of Pierre and Jeanne does not appear in the surviving parish register of Ars: that volume records no marriages between 5 November 1634 and 22 May 1635, when a new book was begun, and the date given for the wedding falls in between. The marriage index of the local genealogical society of Aunis, transcribed from the parish registers, does record it on 7 May 1635 and names the groom’s father as Pierre, so the act survives somewhere outside the filmed volume. His burial in April 1673 is likewise missing from both filmed registers of that year, which have no burials for that month. Jeanne’s parents have not been identified.
