♀Marie Bourg

Marie Bourg (born about 1676) was an Acadian woman of Port-Royal who, with her husband Pierre Theriot and her own parents, was among the first families to settle Cobequid, at the head of the Minas Basin. She was the seventh great-grandmother of Floyd Amatus Delahorne (1922–2014), through her son Joseph Theriot (died before 1766).

Early life

She was the eldest child of Martin Bourg and Marie Potet of Port-Royal. The census of 1686 lists the household as Martin, 36, Marie Potet, 29, and their children Marie, 10, Abraham, 7, Pierre, 5, and Jeanne, 2, on three arpents with four cattle, five sheep and six hogs; by 1693 Marie was seventeen and the eldest of seven children. No marriage or baptism act naming her parents has been found; the connection rests on these household lists and on what followed.

Cobequid

Marie married Pierre Theriot; a compiled online tree dates the marriage to 1698 at Port-Royal. Within three years both couples, Marie and Pierre and her parents Martin and Marie, had moved to the new settlement at Cobequid, where the census of 1701 lists Martin Bourg among the first names and Pierre Theriot a few households on. The two families appear side by side in every Cobequid roll to 1714. The move of a young couple together with the wife’s parents is typical of how the Acadian frontier settlements were founded, by extended families rather than single households.

She is named in the census of 1707 as “Marie BOURG”, wife of Pierre Theriot, with one son under fourteen and four daughters under twelve; by 1714 the household had nine children. Two of their baptisms survive in the Grand-Pré registers, Isabelle in 1710 and Pierre in 1712, both baptised at Cobequid. Her son Joseph married at Grand-Pré in 1724.
