♀Rosalie Theriot

Rosalie Theriot (baptised 5 May 1778) was a daughter of an Acadian family at St. James, on the Mississippi River in Spanish Louisiana, and the wife of Pierre Dupuis, whom she married on 17 February 1800 in a double wedding: the same day, on the same page of the register and before the same witnesses, her brother Caesar married Pierre’s sister Maria. She was the fourth great-grandmother of Floyd Amatus Delahorne (1922–2014), through her daughter Céleste Dupuis (1801–).

Early life

She was baptised Rosalie Monique at St. James on 5 May 1778, the daughter of Thomas Theriot and Agnes Daigle; her godparents were Jacque Melanzon and Monique Dupuys, from whom she took her second name. She was the fourth of at least ten children, and grew up at St. James with brothers and sisters whose baptisms moved from French into Spanish as the colony’s clergy changed.

Marriage and family

On 17 February 1800, at St. James, she married Pierre Dupuis, son of Joseph Dupuis and Marie Poirier; her father was one of the witnesses.

The couple’s first children were baptised at St. James: Céleste in 1801, with her grandmother Agnes Daigle as godmother, Elisa in 1803, and Henriette Hélène in 1804. Henriette Hélène was buried in August 1805 at fifteen months. A son, Alexandre, was baptised at Donaldsonville in 1807, and daughters were born in 1815 and 1817. Her daughter Céleste married into the Cormier family of St. Martin Parish, and a daughter married at St. Martinville in 1847, which suggests the family moved west in the later part of Rosalie’s life.
