♂Philippe Gautier

Philippe Gautier (born about 1592 – buried 13 August 1631) was a Parisian, the father of Charles Gautier, a settler at Québec in New France, and the husband of Marie Pichon. He was the tenth great-grandfather of Nancy Jane Blanchard (1929–2006), through his son Charles Gautier (1628–1703).

Origins and trade

The Fichier Origine, a register-verified compilation of the origins of the settlers of New France, gives Philippe as born at Paris about 1592 and as a master printer. It calls him the son of the late Thibault Gautier, a bourgeois, and Anne Curier, who came from Clermont-Ferrand in Auvergne.

Marriage and children

The same compilation gives his marriage to Marie Pichon at the church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris on 10 June 1618, after a marriage contract dated 27 May 1618. Five children were baptised at Saint-Étienne-du-Mont: Guillaume about 1622, Claude on 22 December 1623, Catherine on 8 July 1626, Charles on 2 October 1628 and Jean on 5 October 1630. Guillaume, Charles and Catherine later crossed to New France.

Death

He was buried at Saint-Étienne-du-Mont on 13 August 1631, and the compilation places his home in the rue des Amandiers. His widow married Charles Sevestre at Paris in February 1632 according to the same compilation, and she came to New France in 1636 with her children, Charles among them.

When their son Charles Gautier Boisverdun, single, married Catherine Camus at Québec, in the parish of Notre-Dame, on 1 August 1656, the register named him the son of the late Philippe Gautier and Marie Pichon: Philippe had died by then, while Marie is not called the late.

In Tanguay’s dictionary

Tanguay’s genealogical dictionary calls him Philippe Gautier, sieur de Comporté, of the parish of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont in Paris, and writes his wife’s name Plichon. It lists three of their children: Catherine, who married Denis Duquet at Québec on 13 May 1638; Guillaume, called Gautier de la Chenaye, who married Esther de Lambourg at Québec on 19 October 1648 and was buried on 26 July 1657; and Charles, whom it gives as born in 1622, six years before the baptism the Fichier Origine records. The same dictionary dates Marie Pichon’s second marriage, to Charles Sevestre, to 1627. That date conflicts with the compilation’s February 1632, and it would fall while Philippe was still living if his burial in 1631 is right. These Tanguay entries have not been checked against the registers.
