♂Jacques Dugue

Jacques Dugue (born about 1647 – buried 13 March 1727) was a surgeon at Trois-Rivières in New France, a native of Semur-en-Auxois in Burgundy, whose wedding in 1672 was witnessed by the governor of Trois-Rivières. He was the eighth great-grandfather of Nancy Jane Blanchard (1929–2006), through his daughter Jeanne Dugue (born about 1692).

Marriage

Jacques came from the parish of Notre-Dame at Semur-en-Auxois, in the diocese of Autun, the son of Michel Dugay and Catherine Delobret. On 21 November 1672, at the parish church of Trois-Rivières, he married Jeanne Baudry, the daughter of Urbain Baudry dit Lamarche, an edge-tool maker who had come to the colony in 1645, and Madeleine Boucher. Among the witnesses the register names “Devarennes, gouverneur de cette paroisse”: René Gaultier de Varennes, the governor of Trois-Rivières. The records do not say how Jacques came to have the governor at his wedding.

Surgeon of Trois-Rivières

The baptisms of his children call him “chirurgien”, a surgeon, and by 1715 his daughter’s marriage register at Montréal calls him a “maître chirurgien”, a master surgeon. Jacques and Jeanne had at least twelve children, most of them baptised at Trois-Rivières between 1675 and 1700. Their daughter Catherine died unmarried in 1698, Marguerite married Jacques Godé in the same year, Jeanne married Jacques Cardinal at Montréal in 1715, and Claire married Louis Lemaistre in 1717. Jeanne Baudry was buried on 21 November 1700, a week after the baptism of their son Claude.

On 29 April 1709, at Trois-Rivières, Jacques married Anne Baillargeon, the daughter of Mathurin Baillargeon and Marie Metaye and the widow of Jean Polton of Cap-de-la-Madeleine. She was buried on 8 March 1722. Jacques outlived his first wife by more than twenty-six years. He was buried at Trois-Rivières on 13 March 1727, aged 80 by the register, “in the cemetery of the hospital”.

Notes

The surname is written Dugay, Dugue, Duguay, Duget and Duguer in the registers. A family compilation of 1994 gives his birth as 1647; his burial age of 80 agrees.

His two marriage registers disagree about where he came from. The 1672 register gives Notre-Dame of Semur-en-Auxois, and the 1709 register calls his father “Michel Dugay de Dolle”, of the parish of Notre-Dame of Dole in the Franche-Comté. No baptism for him has been found in either town’s registers for 1646 or 1647.
