♀Jeanne Dugue

Jeanne Dugue (born about 1692) was a surgeon’s daughter from Trois-Rivières who married Jacques Cardinal at Montréal in 1715 and bore nine children between 1717 and 1735, some baptised at Montréal and some at Detroit, as the family moved between the two towns before settling at Detroit. She was the seventh great-grandmother of Nancy Jane Blanchard (1929–2006), through her son Jean Baptiste Cardinal (born 1728).

Life

Jeanne was the daughter of Jacques Dugue, whom her marriage register calls a “maître chirurgien”, a master surgeon, and Jeanne Baudry, called Lamarche after her father’s by-name. She was living at Trois-Rivières, aged 23 and single, when she married Jacques Cardinal, aged 28, at Notre-Dame de Montréal on 17 February 1715. Her first child was baptised at Montréal in 1717 and her second at Detroit in 1719; four more were baptised at Montréal between 1720 and 1728, one of them a son who died at three months old in 1726, and from 1729 all were baptised at Detroit. Two of her daughters married there, and two of her sons went on to Post Vincennes on the Wabash.

She is named as the mother in her son Jean Baptiste’s marriage register at Detroit in 1755, and as “Marie Jeanne Duque” at her son Nicolas’s banns at Vincennes in 1761. No record of her death has been found.

Notes

Her surname is written Dugué, Duquet and Duguay in different records; they are the same woman. Her own marriage register names her mother Jeanne Lamarche; her parents’ marriage register of 1672 at Trois-Rivières shows the mother was Jeanne Baudry, daughter of Urbain Baudry dit Lamarche.
