♂Urbain Baudry

Urbain Baudry (6 January 1615 – 22 August 1682), called Lamarche, was a taillandier - a maker of axes, scythes and other edge tools - from Luché in the Maine who settled at Trois-Rivières in New France in 1645 and married the thirteen-year-old sister of Pierre Boucher, later governor of Trois-Rivières. He was the ninth great-grandfather of Nancy Jane Blanchard (1929–2006), through his daughter Jeanne Baudry (1659–1700).

Life

Urbain was baptised at the church of Saint-Martin at Luché, in what is now the Sarthe, on 6 January 1615, the son of Jean Baudry and Jeanne Bertin. He came to New France in 1645, when Trois-Rivières was still a small fortified post, and worked there at his trade; the census of about 1666 lists him as a taillandier and habitant, aged 47.

On 18 November 1647 a marriage contract was drawn up at Trois-Rivières between Urbain and Madeleine Boucher, daughter of the joiner Gaspard Boucher; she had been baptised at Mortagne-au-Perche in July 1634 and was thirteen. The records do not explain the early match. Her brother Pierre stood godfather to the couple’s first child, Marie, in 1650. Eleven children were baptised between 1650 and 1680, two of them at Québec and the rest at Trois-Rivières; at least five of the daughters married, among them Jeanne, the wife of the surgeon Jacques Dugue, and Guillaume, named at his mother’s burial as her eldest son, took the by-name Des Buttes.

Urbain died at Trois-Rivières on 22 August 1682 and was buried the next day; the register calls him a “bourgeois”, a settled townsman of standing. Madeleine survived him until 1691.
